Iván Nabalón is a social entrepreneur. After more than 20 years working as a consultant for multinational private companies, he left his job to devote himself to what he enjoys most: exploring how technology can help people live fulfilling lives in society. In 2013, he launched civitana.org, the first civic collaboration social network with self-sovereign digital identity. The project failed, but its patented technology created a new category on the internet for verifying people’s identities and legitimacy in online interactions, and is used daily by millions of people. The resulting company, renamed eID, became a technology standard and pioneered the drive for regulation worldwide. Operating in more than 50 countries, the company was sold to a Norwegian fund in 2021. This event and the experience gained led to the creation of Fundación Civitana, reviving the initiative’s original social purpose.
Carlos Sáez is a lawyer specialising in New Technologies Law, with more than twenty years’ experience advising multinational companies and public authorities on matters including information technology and telecommunications, electronic signatures, digital identity and the protection of fundamental rights. A founding partner of Trebia Abogados, he has participated in national and international projects in both the public and private sectors, working with leading consultancies in the technology and legal fields. His career has convinced him that, in a context in which representative democracy is showing growing limitations, emerging technologies are the key instrument for enabling genuine civic collaboration.

Cristina Romera Soto believes that the law fulfils its true purpose when it helps people move forward safely in times of change. Specialising in New Technologies Law, she has built her career supporting companies and innovative projects as they navigate the legal challenges arising from digital transformation, electronic identity, data protection and trust services. Her experience in pioneering electronic certification and digital identity initiatives has given her first-hand involvement in building mechanisms that foster trust in the digital environment. Her outlook, however, extends beyond technology. She believes that progress is only meaningful when it serves people, and when legal expertise is practised with attentiveness, sound judgement and empathy.
